Sustainability
A commonly accepted definition of ‘Sustainability’ in terms of ‘development’ was provided in the Brundtland Report (“Our Common Future”) published in 1987 which defined it as being:
‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’.
Today, Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) represents one of the greatest challenges facing Australia’s government, industry, business and the community and it is now a major policy issue for the built environment.
Under ESD policies ‘material choice’ is a key element. Timber is one of the most environmentally friendly building materials and this attribute plays a major role in contributing to building sustainability.
This site contains a wide range of general and technical information in regards the environmental and ESD benefits of timber. Feedback is welcomed and should be sent to woodard@tpcsolutions.org.au .
