Teaching Resources

The National Timber Education Program has developed a number of resources that assist lecturers in preparing for units that have some timber education component.

 

A range of resources are available:

 

Materials - Downloadable Powerpoint presentations for lecturers.  It is an introduction to the use of timber in buildings, the properties of timber, and some principles of grading, durability, specification and ordering.  Click on the Materials link in the Navigation bar on the left.

 

 

Introduction to Timber Engineering - Appropriate for AS1720.1 (1997), and HB2.2 (2003) - Australian Standards for Civil Engineering Students - Structural. This resouce includes downloadable Powerpoint presentations for lecturers. It covers the basic principles of timber engineering, focusing on checking the performance of straight-forward timber members and connections to the limit states Australian Timber Structures Standard AS1720.1 (1997).  Click on the Intro Timber Engineering link in the Navigation bar on the left.

 

 

 

Introduction to Timber Engineering 2010 - Appropriate for AS1720.1 (2010) and for lecturers and students with access to AS1720.1 (2010). It is not suitable for use with AS1720.1 (1997) or HB2.2 (2003). This resource includes downloadable Powerpoint presentations for lecturers. It covers the basic principles of timber engineering, focusing on checking the performance of straight-forward timber members and connections to the limit states Australian Timber Structures Standard AS1720.1 (2010).  Click on the Intro Timber Engineering 2010 link in the Navigation bar on the left. (Note that HB2.2 for students won't be updated in 2010.)
 

4 in 1 Educational Resource - PowerPoint presentations on Timber Truss Installation, Introduction to Timber Construction, Interal Timber Fitout, and Timber and Ecologically sustainable Design. 

 

 

AS1684 - A teaching resource package that underpins instruction in building light timber framed housing in Australia.  The package addresses the span tables, tie down requirements and bracing requirements of Parts 2 and 3 of the Residential Timber Framed Construction standard.  Click on AS1684 in the Navigation bar on the left.

 

 

HB108 Timber Design Handbook - not currently available - second edition expected to be released in early 2011. The handbook is a complete timber engineering text available from Standards Australia.  A useful reference book that gives background and examples on the structural design of timber to AS1720.1.  Click on the HB108 Timber Design Handbook link in the Navigation bar on the left.
