Case Studies
This resource includes studies of 18 exemplary Australian timber buildings, representing the work of some of the country’s leading architects and engineers.
Each study presents the building in drawings and photographs, and describes its architectural and technical context. Design strategies for the building are explored, and for each one, different structural, environmental and detailing approaches are addressed. Each of the buildings is available in two formats:
- pdf at 72 dpi for saving and viewing on screen and off-line (screen version)
- pdf at 300 dpi for colour printing to give A3 folios for visual references in studios (print version)
The resource is designed to demonstrate the beauty and versatility of timber as a building material, and illustrate concepts relevant to architectural education. It gives an insight into the processes and decisions that led to the selection of building forms and materials. The information is presented in a highly visual manner featuring photographs and drawings. Its purpose is to highlight various concepts fundamental to architectural design practice, and inspire students to generate their own ideas, and think creatively about how timber can be used as a feature or structurally in the buildings they design.
