Manufactured Wood Products

Manufactured structural timber products are structural elements that are comprised of separate elements, which have been joined together to form a single structural assembly. The purpose of manufacturing such products is to provide long span or special shape load bearing components, which may not otherwise be obtainable in solid timber form.

These products are often used in a structural application, but may also be used where the timber is viewed from a distance, such as in an exposed beam or portal frame.

Manufactured wood products generally have a smaller range of structural properties than sawn timber because they are manufactured to minimise the effect of strength reducing characteristics. These products are generally manufactured under an Australian Product Standard or an industry standard, and have stringent industry supervised quality control programs in place.

The Timber Education Program has a learning resource focused on manufactured wood products that is useful for architects, engineers or builders, but this resource gives a general over-view of them.
